BREAKING NEWS: Carrick withdraws from England squad to face Scotland

The FA have confirmed that Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has withdrawn from the England squad due to an eye infection.

Carrick, who has been capped 29 times for his country, will now return to Manchester for treatment and will miss Wednesday evening’s friendly encounter with Scotland.

The 32-year-old has come back into contention for a starting spot in Roy Hodgson’s England side after a couple of impressive seasons at Old Trafford that culminated in the club winning the 2012-13 Premier League title.

The former Tottenham midfielder appeared just twice for his country over a two-year period during 2010 and 2011 although seven caps have followed since then, with Carrick battling with the likes of Frank Lampard, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for a place in the starting XI.

England face Scotland at Wembley in Wednesday’s friendly for the first time in some 14 years as Hodgson looks to finalise his preparations ahea d of two crucial World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine in September.
