Sarasota has received a nod from a council from rowing’s world governing body to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships.
Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Association received the news from the International Federation of Rowing Associations, or FISA, via an email early Monday afternoon.
The recommendation was made following Suncoast Aquatic’s presentation last month to the group in Switzerland, at the site of the 2013 World Cup rowing championship.
The FISA council’s recommendation now goes to the FISA congress, a larger voting body, for official sanction. The council’s suggestion has been overturned just once in the history of the championships.
FISA’s congress is slated to make an official designation regarding the 2017 event in South Korea in early September.
Southwest Florida’s competition to host the 2017 event at Nathan Benderson Park came from Plovdiv, Bulgaria, which FISA’s council recommended hold the 2018 championships, according to Suncoast Aquatic officials.
