Soccer: Gerardo Martino to Barcelona

Martino to Barcelona

Barcelona reached an agreement Tuesday to sign Gerardo Martino as coach for two seasons, replacing Tito Vilanova.

Vilanova stepped down as Barcelona coach last week following a recurrence of throat cancer.

Martino, 50, has no experience coaching a European club.

Martino was a midfielder from 1980-1996, including a short spell in 1991 with Spanish club Tenerife in the Canary Islands. He also led Paraguay to the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time, in 2010.

Dress code

Zurich was fined $21,300 by the Swiss League after the team’s players wore shirts with a slogan promoting a political campaign for a new stadium in a recent match against Thun.

The phrase “Yes to the Stadium” in German appeared instead of a sponsor logo.

Vermes extended

Sporting Kansas City rewarded coach Peter Vermes with a contract extension through 2017 after he led the MLS club to back-to-back Eastern Conference titles.
