Vintage cross country meeting three times a week

Summer training has started for the Vintage High School cross country program. The Crushers are now meeting three times a week — at 6 p.m. Mondays at Athletic Feat, 3377 Solano Ave.; at 9 a.m. Wednesdays at Alston Park; and at 9 a.m. Fridays at the Vintage High track.

Justin-Siena offers summer youth sports programs

• A girls volleyball program, for those in the fourth through eighth grade, is July 22-25 (Monday-Friday), from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., in Clark Gym at Justin-Siena.

This camp is for girls who are looking to learn the sport as well as develop their current skill sets. The camp will focus on fundamentals as well as advanced techniques for more advanced players. Some of the training will include: approach and hitting techniques, passing techniques, emphasizing footwork, mov ement, and passing.

• A boys and girls tennis program, for those in the fourth through eighth grade, is July 22-26 (Monday-Friday), from 1-4 p.m., at Napa Valley College. The cost is $125. Students become learners of the game through a variety of interactive drills and activities, combined with a healthy dose of competition. Braves tennis coach Jim Reilly will lead students through group activities and personalized instruction, while learning the game and have a positive summertime experience.

• A boys and girls water polo program has two sessions at Napa Valley College.

Session I is July 15-26 (Monday-Friday), 1-4 p.m.

Session II is July 29-Aug. 9 (Monday-Friday), 1-4 p.m.

The cost is $200 for each session, or $350 for both sessions.

It’s an introduction to the game of water polo for beginners with individual and team strategy development for advanced players to be taught. Instruction will include; rules of the game, referee signals , eggbeater kick, individual ball handling skills (dribbling, passing, shooting, and drawing fouls), individual offensive and defensive game concepts and team strategies will be taught to all participants. Camp staff will include Joey Gullikson, Andrea Marin and Cindy Barker (water polo and swimming coaches at Justin-Siena High School) as well as other highly qualified coaches in the area.

Napa Saints Football & Cheer coaches needed

Volunteer adult football and cheer coaches are needed for the 2013 Sa ints youth football season starting July 29. You must be 18 years old to apply and able to pass a background check through DVYFC. Coaching and CPR/First Aid certification is required and all fees are paid for by Napa Saints. The Head’s Up Football training program is required.

Junior Masters Golf Camps begin Wednesday

Napa Golf Course will host Junior Masters Golf Camps for ages 13-17 in two sessions, July 17-19 and July 24-26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

Each session will be limited to to six students.

The cost is $200 per player and includes range grinder card (45 tokens), five rounds of golf, and nine hours of instruction, including video analisis and on-course instruction.

The instructors are Tom Sims, a Class A PGA Instructor with 25 years of teaching experience at all levels, and Scott Merkner, Vintage High School’s girls and bo ys golf coach and a Titleist Performance Institute Certified Instructor.

“Brother Can You Spare a Dime” taking groups to Giants games continue July 21

For the 55th year, the “Brother Can You Spare a Dime” Community Baseball Outings program is again taking groups of special and deserving youngsters, senior citizens and the general public to San Francisco Giants baseball games this season.

A group of tickets each game are donated free of charge to a local youth organization, and the remaining tickets are sold to Napa seniors and local Giants fans.

Tickets remain for Sunday afternoon games on July 21 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Aug. 11 against the Baltimore Orioles.

Napa-to-Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon July 21

The 10th annual Na pa-to-Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon, presented by Subaru, is set for Sunday, July 21. The 13-1-mile race, which sold out with 3,400 runners from all 50 states and 10 other countries, will start at Cuvaison Carneros Winery at 7 a.m. and finish at Sonoma Plaza in front of City Hall.

Produced by Destination Races of Sonoma, it is the flagship event of a Wine Country Half Marathon Series that also has races in Healdsburg, Santa Barbara, Virginia, Oregon and British Columbia.

Another 400 runners will participate in the GunBunFunRun 5K, which starts at Gundlach Bundschu Winery and also finishes at the plaza.

The races will be followed by the United Healthcare Wine & Music Festival at the plaza from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., with 24 wineries and Lagunitas Brewing Company pouring tastings while exhibitors offer samples and demonstrations. The awards ceremony is at 10:30 a.m. in Grinstead Amphitheater, and the band Noma Rocksteady will perform. A prize purse of $2,500 is offered by Rabobank to the top three overall winners, and the top three finishers in each age group receive a bottle of wine.

A free Health & Fitness Expo will be held at Hanna Boys Center in Sonoma on Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will feature packet pickup, product sampling and demonstrations, food, music, beer and wine tasting, and tours of the facility.

Three-time champion Tesfaye Alemayuhu, who set the course record last year in 1:02:38, will lead 16 elite runners in the men’s field.

“We’re excited to have such a strong field of runners here at Napa-to-Sonoma,” enthused Matt Dockstader, president of Destination Races. “It’s truly become one of the most popular half marathons in the world and we are very proud of our accomplishments, particularly the positive economic impact we’ve generated for the area and our nonprofit partners.”

Destination Races partners with national and local charities and non-pro fit organizations. Napa and Sonoma charities include Hanna Boys Center, Community Action of Napa Valley, Native Sons of the Golden West, and Save Our Sports-Sonoma. Team Challenge is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s endurance training and fundraising program, and is expected to bring 700 runners and raise over $2.5 million at the event.

Vintage boys water polo meeting July 22

The Vintage High School boys water polo teams will meet to discuss preseason conditioning, eligibility and varsity squad selection at 5 p.m. Monday, July 22, in Room S2 at the school.

Saunders’ Learn to Swim lessons continue July 22

Napa Aquatics Association presents Saunders’ Learn to Swim, a series of 30-minute swim lessons at the Vintage High School pool.

Lessons will be from July 8-18, and July 22 to Aug. 1.

Available time slots are at 10 a.m., 10:40 a.m., 11:20 a.m., 11:55 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m., 2:40 p.m., 3:20 p.m., and 4 p.m.

The fees for a group of up to three students is $120 per swimmer. The fee for private 1-on-1 lessons is $200. There is a one-time fee for USA Swimming.

The instructors are Bailey Clem, Rio Barnes, Stephanie Lockett, Danny Richardson, Maddi Osgood and Sophia DelBondio.

Storm Baseball Academy July 22-25

Napa Valley College presents the 11th annual Storm Baseball Academy July 8-11 and July 22-25. Each session is for players ages 7-12 and will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

Instructors are NVC head coach Bob Freschi, NVC pitching coach Warren Brusstar and current Storm playe rs.

The fee is $125 for each session through July 8, after which it will be $150.

Vintage High football offers youth camp July 22-26

Vintage High School football still has openings for it two upcoming youth camps. Daily instruction in character lessons, weight training, speed and agility, football classroom instruction, and position-specific football skills is offered.

It’s available to ages 11-14 during the week of July 15-19, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

It’s available to those ages 8-10 during the week of July 22-26, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

NFL players Boyett, Gibson to coach at alma mater’s July 22-26 Napa High Youth Football Skills Camp

Napa High Indian Football has announced th at National Football League players John Boyett and Mike Gibson will help coach at the sixth annual Youth Football Skills Camp July 22-26.

Boyett, who was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in this year’s NFL Draft, is expected to be at the camp July 22 and will hand out 30 signed trading cards for the first 30 pre-registered campers. Boyett, who starred for Napa High during the 2006 and 2007 seasons, played for the University of Oregon and started in two Rose Bowls and the 2010 National Championship game.

Gibson who currently plays for the Arizona Cardinals, is scheduled to be at the camp on July 22 and 23 and to provide each camper with an autographed picture. Gibson is entering his fourth season in the NFL after playing for the Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks. He starred for UC Berkeley and was selected in the 2008 NFL Draft.

The camp is open to any student-athlete, boy or girl, entering the fifth, sixth, seventh or eighth grade, and will acco mmodate only 80 campers (20 per grade level).

The first four days will be from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Campers will be provided with a mid morning snack and fluids. The final day of camp will be held in the early evening at Napa Memorial Stadium and will include dinner for the campers.

The camp will feature daily skill instruction on every football position by current coaches and former varsity players. The camp focuses on the development of athletic skills in a football setting. Basic concepts of speed and power training combined with agility and change of direction training will be combined with learning individual position skills and learning how to work within a team to be successful on offense and defense. The camp includes a low camper to coach ratio and culminates with athletes competing in an exciting 7-on-7 passing tournament directed by the Napa High football coaching staff.

Saints Youth Football & Cheer sign-ups July 24

The Napa Saints Youth Football & Cheer program, which has been serving the youth of the Napa Valley for over 40 years, will have sign-ups on Wednesday, July 24 at Silverado Middle School, from 6-7:30 p.m.

There is a $100 registration non-refundable fee. For all new players, an original birth certificate will be required. All participants must have a valid physical.

The program is for those ages 5-14 years old by Aug. 1.

St. Helena youth football sign-ups July 27

The St. Helena Carpy Gang Youth Football organization will hold sign-ups 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Jul y 27, at the north end of the Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School field.

Carpy Gang is associated with the Vintage Empire League and provides two team levels. Football players in grades 4-8 are invited to join the organization.

Practices start July 29 and will be from 5 to 7 p.m., five days per week, until school starts. After school starts, practices will be three days a week.

The registration fee for each player is $100, or $50 for each additional sibling. Current physical exam results and a copy of a birth certificate are required at signups, and a parent or guardian must be present.

‘British Soccer Camp’ in Napa July 29-Aug. 2

The Napa Youth So ccer League has teamed up with Challenger Sports to host a week-long “British Soccer Camp” July 29-Aug. 2 at Silverado Middle School in Napa.

The camp will run Monday through Friday and each player will be coached by a member of Challenger’s team of 1,100 British soccer coaches flown to the USA exclusively to work on these programs. Challenger Sports will hold over 3,500 Soccer camps this summer and will coach over 130,000 players between the ages of 3 and 19.

Challenger’s new 1,000 Touches coaching syllabus provides an innovative daily regimen of foot-skills, moves, juggling, tactical practices and daily tournament play. Challenger also weaves lessons on respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship into the camper’s daily routine.

The British Soccer Camp program also provides a unique cultural experience for the players, highlighted in the Camp World Cup. The coaches use this daily tournament to teach the players about life, c ustoms and traditions of other countries. The campers are asked to make up soccer chants, wear the team colors of their country, bring flags and learn as much as they can about the country they represent.

Napa Youth Soccer League is offering “British Soccer Camp” sessions for the following ages:

• Ages 3-4, First Kicks, 9–10 a.m., $79.

• Ages 4-6, Mini Soccer, 10-11:30 a.m., $93.

Napa Valley Summer Basketball Development Camp starts July 29

Napa Valley AAU coaches David Goodrich and Mike McDevitt will host a nonprofit skills and scrimmage camp July 29-Aug. 21 at Harvest Middle School’s new gym for competitive boys basketball players in the Napa Valley who are entering the sixth and seventh grades.

This developmental skills and scrimmage camp will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. It is designed to be an intense developmental program for boys interested in increasing their competitive basketball skills, with the goal of basketball being their primary sport.

Camp size is limited to 25 pre-paid players and requires a current AAU youth athlete membership ($16). The cost is $99 per player for 16 total hours of instruction. The drop-in fee is $15 (cash) per player and is offered on a space-available basis per date but also requires a current AAU youth athlete membership card (available at http://www.napavalleypremiercrew.com). This session player fee includes a reversible numbered camp jersey for players registering for one or two sessio ns. Payment is due on the first day of the session at the gym.

Camp coaches are all from the Napa Valley and have had CYO and AAU success. They will utilize proven training techniques and specialized training equipment to optimize a player’s learning and skill development. Instruction in basketball fundamentals is the foundation of the camp. Fun and fast 3-on-3 scrimmages will be included. Plyometrics and other conditioning methods will be used to increase player speed, strength, balance and jumping ability.

Current fifth- and sixth-grade boys are the focus group for development of footwork, ball handling, shooting, rebounding, on- and off-ball spacing, defensive and offensive movement skill drills, and fun 3-on-3 scrimmages.

For the fifth-grade division, an athlete must have been in the fifth grade as of Oct. 1, 2012 and can be no older than 12 on Aug. 31, 2013. An athlete who is in the sixth grade as of Oct. 1, 2012 and wants to play down in the fifth-g rade division can be no older than 11 on Aug. 31, 2013.

For the sixth-grade division, an athlete must be in the sixth grade as of Oct. 1, 2012 and can be no older than 13 on Aug. 31, 2013. An athlete that is in the seventh grade as of Oct. 1, 2012 and wants to play down in the sixth grade division, can be no older than 12 on Aug. 31, 2013.

The reigning Monticello Empire League champion Vintage High School volleyball team will hold a Summer Lobster Boil fundraiser at 6 p.m. Aug. 3 at Napa Grange Hall, 3275 Hagen Rd., Napa.

The entry fee is $90 per person, and includes beer and wine, appetizers and boiled lobster.

The Crushers will use proceeds from the event to support their efforts to travel and compete in preseason matches in San Diego Aug. 30 to Sept. 2.
