RIO DE JANEIRO, July 11 (Reuters) – Atletico Mineiro reached their first Libertadores Cup final on Wednesday with a 3-2 penalty shootout win over Newell’s Old Boys after their two-legged semi-final ended 2-2.
Trailing 2-0 to the Argentine side from the first leg, Atletico recovered to win by the same score in a match that was interrupted for more than 10 minutes by a power failure.
Brazil forward Bernard scored from a Ronaldinho pass after three minutes and substitute Guilherme made it 2-0 near the end.
In the shootout, Victor saved the deciding penalty from Maxi Rodriguez after Ronaldinho had put Atletico 3-2 up.
Atletico will meet three-times champions Olimpia of Paraguay in the final where they will be looking for Brazil’s fourth consecutive Libertadores Cup title after the victories of Internacional, Santos and Corinthians in the last three years.
